Everyone knows Valentine's Day. But where does Valentine's Day actually come from? And where does the tradition of giving presents, sending greeting cards or giving flowers on this day come from?

According to a legend, Valentine's Day goes back to the Italian bishop, Valentin von Ternit, who gave our Valentine's Day its name. He is said to have married couples despite a ban and gave flowers away – which is still part of the tradition on Valentine's Day today.

Valentine's Day is celebrated in many different ways around the world. In England and the USA there is a long tradition of writing greeting cards "Valentine Greetings". In Japan, chocolate is given to men in particular on February 14th.
